Protecting content

Multiple passwords for different groups

Updated September 27, 2026 2 min read Plugin v1.1.0

Multiple passwords

You can create as many passwords as you need, with no limit. Several passwords can apply to the same content — any valid password grants access. This is useful when you want to give different groups their own password so you can revoke one without disturbing the others.

Labels and status

Field Purpose
Label A name for your own reference, shown in the admin list. Not visible to visitors.
Status Active or Inactive. An inactive password stops working immediately without being deleted, so you can park a password and bring it back later.

Goal: give two audiences their own password for the same content, so you can revoke one without affecting the other.

Use this for: several clients reviewing the same staging site, or different departments accessing one resource.

Steps

  1. Go to Password Protected → Passwords.
  2. Create the first password:
    • Label — “Acme Corp”
    • Scope — Global (or whatever you are protecting)
    • Password — a password just for them
    • Status — Active
  3. Click Add password.
  4. Repeat for each group, changing only the label and password.

How it behaves

Any valid password grants access. A visitor types whichever one they were given and gets in.

Why bother

When Acme’s project ends, set their password to Inactive. Their access stops immediately. Everyone else is unaffected and nobody has to be told a new password.

The activity log records which password was used, so you can see which group is actually visiting.
